The Port of New York and New Jersey was established as a new world trading center in New Amsterdam in 1624. It has since become the economic engine to the region and is vital on many fronts.

Although the port has functioned here for hundreds of years, here is some valuable information:

History:
1921: Compact between the States of New York and New Jersey creating
the Port Authority and establishing the port of New York District.
1932: Majority of port employers form New York Shipping Association.
1955: New York Shipping Association Incorporates
Annual Container Volume: 2.54 million containers in 2004 – a 6.7% increase over 2003 of 2.38 million containers
Ranking by Container Volume: 3rd busiest container port in the United States 14th busiest container port in the world
Cruise Traffic: 1,135,000 passengers (FY 2004)
Auto Volume: The number of autos handled in 2004 increased by 9.4% to 682,000 units
Employment: 102,000 direct – 229,000 local jobs
413,000 national jobs
Waterfront: 650 square miles of rich, diverse habitat
